A revised philosophy survey examines freedom and the common good
William Sweet’s revised account of Bernard Bosanquet adds discussion of a debate about the common good, individual freedom and state power.
Why it matters
The debate tests how collective decisions can respect personal freedom.
Keep in mind
These are contested philosophical arguments. Their conclusions depend on how freedom and shared interests are understood.
Evidence & sources +
Critics argue that appeals to a shared purpose can justify coercion and exclude people. Defenders read his account of shared political will as supporting self-government and individual freedom. Sweet sets out these competing readings.
Compared section 3.5 with the Summer 2026 archive. The revision date is confirmed; inconsistent feed metadata prevents a reliable intraday publication time. Reviewed .
An updated philosophy survey examines the limits of self-defence
Helen Frowe and Jonathan Parry’s revised survey examines arguments about defensive force. A new section considers resistance that cannot prevent the threatened physical harm, including competing appeals to moral standing and protest.
Why it matters
Ethical decisions depend on which aims and limits an argument accepts.
Keep in mind
This is philosophical scholarship. Its conclusions depend on contested moral assumptions, and its examples test arguments.
Evidence & sources +
The addition tests how these proposed justifications fit the requirement that defensive harm serve a necessary purpose. The authors describe disagreement and criticism.
Bank of England held rates as energy prices raised inflation risks
The Bank of England held Bank Rate at 3.75%. Six committee members supported holding; three preferred a rise to 4%. The September decision came as higher energy prices increased the Bank’s concerns about inflation.
Why it matters
Central-bank decisions connect price pressures with the cost of borrowing across the economy.
Covers UK monetary policy and inflation outlook.
Keep in mind
Those projections depend on energy prices and how costs spread through the economy. They express a conditional outlook; future policy remains open.
Evidence & sources +
Using energy prices from 14 September, Bank staff projected inflation around 3.75% in late 2026 and slightly above 4% in early 2027.
MIT researchers placed a roughly two-nanometre polymer film between gold electrodes. Voltage compressed the film and changed its current. Because the material relaxed gradually, successive pulses could accumulate until the device produced a neuron-like firing response.
Why it matters
A material’s physical behaviour can perform some of the memory and processing operations used in brain-inspired computing.
Keep in mind
This is a laboratory device demonstration. The paper’s much lower, roughly 2-femtojoule energy prospect is a projection requiring reduced leakage and further engineering. Practical networks, training methods and whole-system energy advantages remain to be demonstrated.
Evidence & sources +
The experiment demonstrated pulse integration and coupling between two devices, where one suppressed the other. A 200-by-200-nanometre device consumed 54 nanojoules in the reported demonstration. Its memory persisted over seconds.
Reviewed the full Science Advances article through Europe PMC and its publication metadata. Online publication and MIT announcement were 16 September; the journal issue is dated 18 September. Measured energy is separated from the future projection. Reviewed .
Entanglement measured through the decay of Z bosons
ATLAS reconstructed the spin correlations of two Z bosons created when a Higgs boson decayed. The directions of four resulting electrons or muons favoured an entangled quantum state, beyond a mixture of separate quantum states for each boson.
Why it matters
This extends experimental tests of quantum entanglement to short-lived particles produced at the Large Hadron Collider.
Keep in mind
The result depends on the tested hypotheses, including the Higgs spin and symmetry assumptions and the Standard Model description of Z decays. It establishes evidence within that framework; a Bell-inequality test was outside this analysis.
Evidence & sources +
The study combined proton collisions at 13 and 13.6 TeV. Its full angular-distribution test disfavoured the tested separable-state hypothesis at 4.7 standard deviations. At least one of the two Z bosons was off-shell, a short-lived virtual state.
Reviewed the original analysis and journal record. Paper published 11 September; CERN announcement 17 September. The first preprint appeared 27 March. The separate CMS result discussed by CERN remains a preliminary analysis dated 28 November 2025. Reviewed .
OpenAI releases a managed API for long-running agents
OpenAI introduced the Agents API in public beta. It provides the agent runtime used by Codex, together with managed environments for code, files, intermediate results and coordinated subtasks.
Keep in mind
This is a product announcement. Practical reliability, costs and permission boundaries still need evaluation on the tasks a developer intends to automate.
Evidence & sources +
Developers can build workflows that keep working across many steps, with more of the execution infrastructure supplied by the platform.
GPT-6 Astra adds stronger computer use and complex task execution
OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra with reported gains in computer use, coding, scientific work and multi-step professional tasks. Its accompanying safety overview describes stronger cybersecurity capabilities and additional deployment safeguards.
Keep in mind
The announcement reports OpenAI’s evaluations. Benchmark results and demonstrations have specific conditions; performance on an individual task requires separate checking.
Evidence & sources +
Improved use of existing software could let an assistant complete more of a workflow, from inspecting information to producing and checking an output.
Google introduces Gemini 3.8 Flash and a restricted cyber variant
Google announced Gemini 3.8 Flash for coding, reasoning and agent workflows. It also introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber for selected defensive cybersecurity users through its Fairwind programme.
Keep in mind
Performance comparisons are reported by Google. Access to the cyber variant is restricted, and its announcement gives limited evidence about outcomes across ordinary production environments.
Evidence & sources +
The release combines advances in task performance with different access arrangements for capabilities that carry greater misuse risks.
Anthropic releases Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 with different safeguards
Anthropic introduced Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1, reporting improvements in coding, knowledge work and research. The company describes them as the same underlying model with different safeguards: Fable has general availability, while Mythos uses trusted access programmes.
Keep in mind
The results come from the developer’s announcement. Benchmark setups and safeguard interventions affect scores, and availability varies by product and access programme.
Evidence & sources +
Access policies and safeguards increasingly affect which tasks a model can perform for a particular user.
UK public spending exceeded income by £1.8 billion in July
The ONS estimates that UK public spending exceeded tax and other income by £1.8 billion in July 2026. Borrowing across April to July totalled £56.7 billion, £6.0 billion below the same four months a year earlier.
Why it matters
This connects the taxes people pay, the services government funds and the borrowing needed to cover a gap.
Covers UK public sector, July 2026 and April to July 2026
Keep in mind
These are provisional estimates that can change. July has unusually large self-assessment tax receipts; year-to-date comparisons give a fuller picture.
Evidence & sources +
Income includes income-related taxes, VAT and National Insurance. Spending includes public services, benefits, investment and debt interest. The ONS combines government and other public bodies when calculating the overall gap.
Studied in People with treatment-resistant depression in two controlled trials
Keep in mind
Feasibility outcomes, primary efficacy outcomes and exploratory analyses deserve separate labels. Psychological support, participant expectations and difficulties maintaining blinding affect interpretation. EPISODE reported two serious adverse reactions, including one case of persistent perceptual symptoms. These trials do not establish broad benefits in healthy people.
Evidence & sources +
A 2026 NHS feasibility trial randomised 60 people and reported encouraging exploratory depression outcomes. In the larger EPISODE trial, the prespecified primary response endpoint was not statistically significant, although secondary symptom measures improved.
Gemini Robotics ER 2 uses video to coordinate physical tasks
Google introduced a reasoning model that plans robot tasks, watches video to assess progress and coordinates actions across different robots. It passes movement commands to lower-level robot controllers and can use external tools.
Keep in mind
The announcement reports controlled evaluations and demonstrations. Google reports 57.4% accuracy on its progress-classification task, showing that tracking completion remains fallible. Deployment also depends on robot hardware and controllers.
Evidence & sources +
Physical tasks require a system to judge what has changed, decide the next step and notice when an action fails.
Rewriting bacterial DNA exposed hidden dependencies
Researchers changed large stretches of bacterial DNA while preserving the intended protein instructions. Many changes still disrupted the cells. Measuring DNA, RNA and proteins together helped them find faults and improve growth, showing how closely these layers depend on each other.
Why it matters
Changing one layer of a living system can disturb several others.
Studied in Engineered E. coli bacteria studied in laboratory cultures.
Keep in mind
These were controlled bacterial experiments. Growth effects depended on the strain and environment; applications in other organisms need separate testing.
Evidence & sources +
The study built six partly rewritten E. coli strains, incorporating up to 45.8% of the proposed synthetic genome. Substituting equivalent three-letter DNA instructions changed how RNA and proteins were produced. Targeted editing and laboratory evolution helped restore cell performance.
A large trial found improvements in blood glucose and body weight in adults with type 2 diabetes. Retatrutide remains investigational in the United States.
Studied in 537 adults with type 2 diabetes
Keep in mind
These participants had diabetes. Results cannot automatically be applied to healthy people or used to establish long-term cardiovascular benefit. Gastrointestinal adverse effects were common. The trial was funded by Eli Lilly. FDA approval, clinical efficacy and product quality are separate questions.
Evidence & sources +
TRANSCEND-T2D-1 randomly assigned 537 adults whose diabetes was inadequately controlled through diet and exercise. Retatrutide improved the primary HbA1c outcome and reduced weight over 40 weeks.
Semax claims exceed the available clinical evidence
Benefits for focus in healthy adults remain uncertain.
Covers Neurological patient studies assessed in an FDA evidence review
Keep in mind
Studies in people with neurological disease answer different questions from enhancement in healthy adults. Uncertain effectiveness accompanies incomplete safety information. The document records an advisory review and proposed position, with final regulatory decisions requiring a separate check.
Evidence & sources +
FDA reviewers assessed the nominated neurological uses of Semax and described limitations in the clinical studies, including controls, reporting and study size. The review found no supporting literature for the nominated ADHD use.
Creatine evidence is strongest in a training context
Creatine can support performance and training adaptations. The outcome and population shape the size of the benefit.
Studied in 37 trials in healthy men aged 18–30
Keep in mind
The review focuses on men aged 18–30 and combines trials with different designs. Estimates for some performance measures were highly variable. Lean mass includes water, so an increase is not a direct measure of newly formed muscle. These results do not establish a longevity benefit.
Evidence & sources +
A 2026 systematic review included 37 trials in healthy young men. Lean-mass gains were more consistent when creatine accompanied resistance training, with performance benefits varying by measure.
Reviewed the 20 May 2026 correction, which removed two ineligible-age studies and updated analyses. The broad training-context conclusion remains. Reviewed .
MOTS-c has a registered human trial with results pending
Human benefit and long-term safety remain unresolved. A recruiting trial is an opportunity to test the claims.
Planned study A planned trial of 120 adults with prediabetes and overweight or obesity
Keep in mind
Registry information is supplied by the sponsor and can change. Registration establishes a research plan; it provides no efficacy result. Earlier cell and animal findings cannot establish human benefit. The FDA briefing is advisory material and predates completion of this registered trial.
Evidence & sources +
ClinicalTrials.gov lists a phase 2a placebo-controlled trial in adults with prediabetes and overweight or obesity. The record plans 120 participants and had no posted results when checked. An FDA evidence review describes substantial gaps in human exposure and safety evidence.
Ketamine and esketamine need separate evidence labels
Esketamine is one of ketamine's two mirror-image molecular forms. Its licensed nasal spray has its own evidence, indications and safety requirements.
Covers Adults meeting the US label's specified depression indications.
Keep in mind
The label carries warnings about sedation, dissociation, respiratory depression and misuse, with supervised administration and monitoring. Prevention of suicide has not been demonstrated. Findings for this nasal product cannot automatically be transferred to other ketamine preparations or routes. Authorisation and access vary by country.
Evidence & sources +
The US Spravato label includes treatment-resistant depression in adults, either alone or alongside an oral antidepressant. It also includes depressive symptoms in adults with major depression and acute suicidal thoughts or behaviour when combined with an oral antidepressant.
Checked the current official Spravato label on DailyMed and the FDA label supporting the expanded indication. The displayed date records the DailyMed update. The approval details concern the United States. Reviewed .
Calcium scoring can clarify an uncertain prevention decision
The 2026 ACC/AHA guideline supports selective coronary artery calcium testing when the result could change a decision about lipid-lowering treatment.
Covers Selected asymptomatic adults without known atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, assessed within the US guideline's risk framework.
Keep in mind
This is US guidance. UK care uses its own cardiovascular risk assessment. Scanning involves radiation, and a zero score can coexist with non-calcified plaque. People with chest pain need a clinical assessment and an appropriate diagnostic pathway.
Evidence & sources +
A non-contrast CT scan measures calcified coronary plaque. The guidance covers men aged 40 and over and women aged 45 and over with intermediate risk or selected borderline risk, when the treatment decision remains uncertain.
The Bank of England is testing how a digital pound could work
The Bank of England and Treasury published a design-phase update for a possible digital pound. It would let households and businesses use central-bank money for everyday digital payments. Work covers payment connections, privacy, reliability and potential costs.
Why it matters
The project makes the link between money, computer systems, public institutions and trust visible.
Keep in mind
Introduction remains undecided in the reviewed material. Launch would require a further public consultation and legislation passed by Parliament. Design commitments still require delivery and scrutiny.
Evidence & sources +
The proposed system would work alongside cash and existing digital payments. Testing explores how different forms of money could move between services. The Bank expects its blueprint and assessment to inform a decision on next steps in 2026.
Agent research measures consistency and the severity of failures
Rabanser and colleagues propose twelve reliability measures covering consistency, robustness, predictability and safety. The current version evaluates fifteen models on two benchmarks and finds that recent capability gains produced only small reliability improvements.
Keep in mind
The study covers its selected models and benchmarks. The paper was first submitted in February 2026 and revised in June; its results require fresh testing for later releases.
Evidence & sources +
A useful evaluation can examine repeated runs, small changes to a task and the consequences of an error, alongside the rate of successful answers.
Changing a social-media feed changed some political opinions
A randomised study assigned US X users to different feeds for seven weeks in 2023. Switching on the recommendation algorithm shifted some policy and current-event opinions towards conservative positions. The findings were published in Nature in February 2026.
Why it matters
Software changes what people encounter, which can influence attention, beliefs and the accounts they follow.
Studied in Active US X users; 4,965 completed the final survey
Keep in mind
The study detected no significant change in party identification or hostility towards the other party. Findings concern active US users and X’s 2023 system; other settings require separate evidence.
Evidence & sources +
The main analysis included 4,965 people. Users exposed to recommendations followed more conservative activist accounts. Keeping those connections may help explain why switching the algorithm off produced different results.
A small DMT trial found short-term depression improvement
A phase IIa trial found an early symptom benefit when DMT was delivered with psychological support.
Studied in 34 adults with major depressive disorder in the randomised comparison
Keep in mind
The sample was small and the blinded comparison was short. Later follow-up included open-label treatment, which weakens causal comparisons. Transient anxiety, nausea and infusion-site pain occurred. Results for this N,N-DMT formulation cannot be transferred to other compounds such as 5-MeO-DMT.
Evidence & sources +
The randomised part included 34 adults with major depressive disorder. Depression scores improved more with DMT than placebo at two weeks.
Injectable NAD+ has limited evidence and distinct safety concerns
A 2026 review of clinic records reported uncomfortable symptoms during NAD+ infusions. Evidence for lasting health or longevity benefits remains limited.
Studied in Clients receiving intravenous NAD+ or nicotinamide riboside in a commercial clinical setting; FDA reports concern recipients of injectable NAD+ products.
Keep in mind
This was an observational study in a commercial setting with short follow-up. It cannot establish long-term effectiveness or comparative safety. Contamination reports concern product quality. Evidence about oral NMN addresses a different molecule and route.
Evidence & sources +
The retrospective study compared intravenous NAD+ with intravenous nicotinamide riboside. NAD+ recipients reported gastrointestinal symptoms, increased heart rate and chest pressure during infusions. FDA has separately reported severe reactions to injectable NAD+ products consistent with excessive endotoxin contamination.
Reviewed the primary study abstract and FDA's sterile-compounding alert dated 2024-10-30. The study is retrospective and does not test longevity. Its infusion symptoms and FDA's product-contamination concerns are separate observations. Reviewed .
Retacrit contains epoetin zeta, which stimulates red blood cell production. Its authorised uses concern particular forms of anaemia and transfusion needs.
Covers Patients meeting the product's specific anaemia or transfusion-related indications; eligibility differs by condition.
Keep in mind
Risks include raised blood pressure and blood clots. The product information also describes concerns about tumour control and survival in some cancer settings. These defined clinical uses provide no basis for general energy or performance-enhancement claims.
Evidence & sources +
UK product information covers kidney-related anaemia, selected chemotherapy patients, selected surgical settings and certain lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes. Retacrit and retatrutide are separate medicines with different active ingredients and clinical roles.
Checked EMA's Retacrit assessment and Pfizer's current UK Summary of Product Characteristics. The date records the UK page update. The current UK indication list includes selected myelodysplastic syndromes, which the older EMA public summary omits. Reviewed .
A controlled trial reported symptom improvement in generalised anxiety disorder. Larger confirmatory trials remain important.
Studied in 198 adults with generalised anxiety disorder
Keep in mind
This phase 2b study explored several study groups and involved selected patients. Perceptual effects can make treatment allocation apparent. Common adverse effects included visual disturbances, nausea and headache. Follow-up and sample size limit conclusions about durability and uncommon harms.
Evidence & sources +
The MM120 study randomised 198 adults across placebo and several study groups. Two groups showed significantly greater improvement in the primary anxiety score at four weeks.
A rebuilt molecular motor made ATP with a weaker driving force
Cells use a rotating protein machine to make ATP, a molecule that powers many cell activities. Researchers altered a bacterial version so it could make ATP under a weaker electrical and chemical driving force, using more charged particles for each ATP.
Why it matters
It connects physics to biology: particle movement turns a molecular motor, which drives a chemical reaction.
Studied in Purified Bacillus PS3 enzymes placed in artificial membrane vesicles.
Keep in mind
The work tested purified bacterial enzymes in artificial membranes. Effects on human energy, fatigue and ageing remain untested here.
Evidence & sources +
The engineered ATP synthase moved about 5.8 hydrogen ions per ATP, compared with 3.0 in the comparison enzyme. Extra ion-conducting units changed its energy trade-off, allowing ATP production under conditions where the comparison enzyme stopped producing it.
Ancient DNA adds evidence of connections between early civilisations
Researchers sequenced the genome of a man buried in Egypt around 2855–2570 BCE. Comparisons with available ancient DNA linked most of his ancestry to North African populations and about one-fifth to the eastern Fertile Crescent, including Mesopotamia.
Why it matters
Biology can add evidence to archaeology’s account of how people moved and societies connected.
Studied in One ancient adult man from Nuwayrat, Egypt
Keep in mind
This is one individual. The ancestry estimates depend on available comparison samples. More genomes are needed to describe the diversity of ancient Egypt or the timing and routes of migration.
Evidence & sources +
The authors interpret the genetic similarity as evidence that contact included human migration. Radiocarbon dating places this individual near the transition into Egypt’s Old Kingdom, extending the genetic record much further back.
An early choice changed which evidence people used
People watched a series of dots and judged where they came from. After making an early choice, they gave more weight to later evidence supporting it. Brain measurements suggested contradictory information was still represented, while contributing less to the final answer.
Why it matters
Seeing useful evidence and allowing it to change a decision are separate steps.
Studied in 34 adults recruited; 30 remained after recording exclusions, with 29 in key neural comparisons.
Keep in mind
A small laboratory task offers limited evidence about complex real-world beliefs. The study inferred information use statistically and did not test a practical cure for bias.
Evidence & sources +
Researchers recorded the brain's magnetic signals during a visual judgement task. Their analysis linked confirmation bias to how information represented in parietal brain regions contributed to the participant's estimate.
Radiocarbon and handwriting analysis suggest older dates for some scrolls
Researchers combined radiocarbon dating with AI analysis of handwriting to estimate the age of Dead Sea Scroll manuscripts. Their estimates often placed copies earlier than traditional handwriting assessments, opening fresh discussion about the history of ancient Jewish texts.
Why it matters
Dating surviving copies helps scholars reconstruct when religious ideas were being written down and shared.
Studied in Ancient manuscript samples and images
Keep in mind
Dates are estimates with uncertainty. A surviving copy’s age and the original composition date are separate questions. Claims about religious truth remain outside this historical dating method.
Evidence & sources +
The Enoch model learnt from 24 radiocarbon-dated scroll samples, then estimated dates for 135 previously undated manuscripts. Its input was the shape of handwriting. The authors use these findings to reconsider the sequence of writing styles.
At CERN, fast-moving lead nuclei passed close together. Their intense electromagnetic fields could knock three protons out of a nucleus, changing lead into gold. A 2025 study measured this process through the particles released during these near misses.
Why it matters
An element's identity depends on the proton count inside its atomic centre.
Keep in mind
The nuclei rapidly struck accelerator equipment and fragmented. The quantities and short survival time make this unsuitable for producing usable gold.
Evidence & sources +
Lead has 82 protons; gold has 79. CERN estimated that its 2015–2018 run produced 29 trillionths of a gram of gold nuclei across four experiments. The measurements also help researchers understand particle losses from accelerator beams.
Checked the journal paper and CERN's 8 May announcement. The displayed date is the paper's publication; the quoted production estimate concerns older accelerator runs. Reviewed .
Researchers agreed in advance how to test two explanations of conscious experience. They recorded brain activity while 256 people viewed images. Some results matched each theory, while other results challenged their predictions about where and when conscious information appears.
Why it matters
A theory becomes easier to assess when its predictions and the test are agreed before the results arrive.
Studied in 256 human participants across three brain-recording methods.
Keep in mind
The experiment examined visible images. It leaves the broader explanation of subjective experience open, and researchers continue to debate how these results bear on each theory.
Evidence & sources +
The study compared integrated information theory with global neuronal workspace theory using three recording methods. Visual brain regions maintained information about the pictures; researchers did not detect several predicted patterns of communication or brief bursts of activity.
Reviewed the primary experiment and its preregistered predictions; conclusions remain specific to the tested predictions. The linked GNW response has a 2026 author-name correction, which leaves its scientific argument unchanged. Reviewed .
Some pooled trials suggest benefits in people with heart failure. General energy and prevention claims remain separate questions.
Studied in Patients with heart failure across 33 randomised studies
Keep in mind
Trials varied in size, methods and follow-up. Findings in established heart failure cannot establish prevention benefits in healthy adults or support broad anti-ageing claims. Individual study quality and the contribution of a few larger trials matter when interpreting the pooled result.
Evidence & sources +
A 2024 meta-analysis of 33 randomised studies reported lower mortality and heart-failure hospitalisation with CoQ10 alongside usual care. The authors rated evidence for these outcomes as moderate certainty.
Advanced-AI timelines remain forecasts with wide uncertainty
A 2024 study collected predictions from 2,778 AI researchers. Responses expressed substantial uncertainty about advanced AI, and different questions about capabilities and the automation of jobs produced markedly different timelines.
Keep in mind
This is historical evidence about researchers’ expectations. The survey measures beliefs, and its results leave the arrival date of a technological singularity unresolved.
Evidence & sources +
The survey provides context for singularity discussions: a predicted date depends on the outcome being defined and the assumptions behind the estimate.
Tadalafil has an observational cardiovascular signal
A retrospective study linked tadalafil exposure with fewer cardiovascular events in men with erectile dysfunction.
Studied in Men with erectile dysfunction in a US insurance database, without a major cardiovascular event during the preceding year.
Keep in mind
Selection and residual confounding limit causal conclusions. This study cannot establish that daily 5 mg tadalafil prevents heart disease. Cialis 5 mg has UK indications for erectile dysfunction and enlarged-prostate symptoms. Nitrates and riociguat are contraindicated because blood pressure can fall dangerously; other cardiovascular contraindications also require a prescribing review.
Evidence & sources +
US insurance records compared 8,156 tadalafil users with 21,012 men with erectile dysfunction and no PDE5-inhibitor claims. The adjusted hazard ratio for major cardiovascular events was 0.81 (95% confidence interval 0.70–0.94).
Reviewed the primary cohort and the UK Cialis 5 mg prescribing information updated 2026-02-24. The date shown is the study publication year. Reviewed .
MDMA-assisted therapy improved PTSD scores in a phase 3 trial
The trial found greater PTSD symptom improvement in the MDMA group. The treatment setting and trial limitations remain central to interpretation.
Studied in 104 people with PTSD
Keep in mind
Participants could often infer their allocation from noticeable drug effects, creating potential expectancy bias. The combined drug-and-therapy intervention requires careful interpretation. This trial cannot establish safety for unsupervised use or detect all uncommon harms. A later author correction added collaborators without changing reported outcomes.
Evidence & sources +
Researchers randomised 104 participants to MDMA or placebo with the same manualised therapy. The MDMA group improved more on the clinician-rated primary PTSD scale.
Testosterone safety depends on the clinical context
A large trial clarified cardiovascular risk in men with confirmed hypogonadism. Blood-pressure and other safety concerns still matter.
Studied in 5,246 men with symptoms, repeatedly low testosterone and cardiovascular risk
Keep in mind
The findings concern a selected population, monitored treatment and a specific formulation. They cannot establish safety for enhancement or indefinite use. The paper reported higher incidences of atrial fibrillation, acute kidney injury and pulmonary embolism. FDA retained the limitation concerning age-related hypogonadism.
Evidence & sources +
TRAVERSE studied 5,246 men with symptoms, repeatedly low testosterone and cardiovascular disease or elevated risk. Major cardiovascular events met the trial’s non-inferiority criterion. In 2025, FDA removed the related boxed-warning language and required blood-pressure warnings.
Vitamin D did not reduce fractures in this general-population trial
The VITAL fracture trial found no clear reduction in fractures among adults selected without requiring vitamin D deficiency or osteoporosis.
Studied in 25,871 midlife and older adults
Keep in mind
The population was generally healthy and was not recruited for deficiency, low bone mass or osteoporosis. The findings leave the benefits of treating those specific conditions as separate questions. They also address fractures, rather than every possible role of vitamin D.
Evidence & sources +
Researchers followed 25,871 midlife and older adults for a median of 5.3 years. Total, non-vertebral and hip fractures were similar between the vitamin D and placebo groups.
Vitamin K2 did not slow valve calcification in this trial
A change in a vitamin K-related blood marker did not translate into a clear change in valve calcification.
Studied in 365 men with established aortic valve calcification
Keep in mind
This result concerns aortic valve calcification in older men and a combined intervention. It does not isolate vitamin K2 from vitamin D or answer every question about bone health and vascular disease. Biomarker changes need clinical-outcome validation.
Evidence & sources +
A placebo-controlled study in 365 men with established aortic valve calcification tested vitamin K2 together with vitamin D over two years. The primary CT measure of calcification progression showed no significant between-group difference.
NMN can raise a blood marker; longevity remains unproven
A rise in blood NAD shows a biological effect. Human longevity and broad health benefits require separate evidence.
Studied in 30 healthy adults in a short-term oral NMN trial
Keep in mind
The trial included 30 people and was too short and small to establish long-term benefit or uncommon harms. Oral NMN is a precursor to NAD+. Its results cannot determine the benefit or safety of intravenous NAD+ products.
Evidence & sources +
A small placebo-controlled trial in healthy adults found that oral NMN increased blood NAD over 12 weeks. It examined short-term safety and metabolism. FDA separately reported serious reactions to compounded injectable NAD+ associated with possible endotoxin contamination.
In adults without known deficiencies, routine supplements have shown little overall benefit for preventing cardiovascular disease or cancer.
Studied in Generally healthy adults without known nutritional deficiencies
Keep in mind
This review concerns primary prevention in generally healthy adults. Deficiency treatment and other specific indications require their own evidence. A result for one ingredient cannot establish that a combined vitamin stack improves health.
Evidence & sources +
The USPSTF evidence review examined 84 studies. It found little or no benefit for most vitamin and mineral interventions on the main prevention outcomes. Multivitamins showed a small cancer-incidence signal with important limitations. Beta-carotene raised lung-cancer risk in the pooled evidence.
Small trials suggest a possible improvement in falling asleep, with low confidence in the result.
Studied in 151 older adults with insomnia across three trials
Keep in mind
The small evidence base had moderate to high risk of bias and provides little information about long-term outcomes. It does not establish a reliable benefit in younger adults or people without insomnia. A 2024 correction updated search-method wording and screening counts; it did not announce a change to the pooled sleep findings.
Evidence & sources +
A systematic review found three randomised trials involving 151 older adults with insomnia. Sleep-onset time favoured magnesium, while total sleep time showed no statistically clear improvement. The authors rated the evidence low to very low quality.
Fish-oil findings depend on formulation and population
The VITAL trial found no clear reduction in its main cardiovascular outcome from the tested marine omega-3 supplement.
Studied in 25,871 adults in primary prevention
Keep in mind
This was a primary-prevention population and a particular EPA/DHA formulation. Prescription products, triglyceride treatment and patients with established cardiovascular disease have different evidence questions. Secondary outcomes should retain their exploratory context.
Evidence & sources +
The randomised trial followed 25,871 adults for a median of 5.3 years. The primary composite of major cardiovascular events did not differ significantly between omega-3 and placebo.
Selank has limited clinical evidence and safety gaps
A small anxiety trial offers preliminary evidence. It leaves broad claims and long-term safety unresolved.
Studied in 62 people with generalised anxiety disorder or neurasthenia
Keep in mind
A small active-comparator study provides limited precision and does not establish benefit for healthy-adult focus or general wellbeing. Reporting in the available abstract is limited. The study of Selank and the FDA discussion of its acetate form should retain their formulation details.
Evidence & sources +
A 2008 randomised study enrolled 62 people with generalised anxiety disorder or neurasthenia and compared Selank with medazepam. The abstract reported similar anxiety effects between treatments. FDA safety information identifies gaps concerning Selank acetate and potential immune reactions associated with aggregation or peptide impurities.
Growth hormone anti-ageing evidence has important limits
Small changes in body composition came with more adverse effects in a review of healthy older adults.
Studied in Healthy older adults in small, short studies
Keep in mind
This historical review included small, short studies and cannot establish effects on lifespan or long-term function. Treatment of diagnosed growth hormone deficiency involves a different population and clinical question. New studies should be checked against this limited baseline.
Evidence & sources +
The review found modest increases in lean mass and reductions in fat mass. Swelling, joint pain and other adverse effects were more frequent with growth hormone.
