The same class now displays two remaining places. Amina feels she should decide quickly. The approaching limit changes her sense of urgency even though the lesson’s content, price and date have stayed the same.
The lesson falls during an existing family visit. Amina still likes the recommendation, yet attending carries a practical cost. A fuller decision includes the class, the social signals and what joining would displace.

Cialdini organised and popularised this framework. Each lesson also names researchers behind relevant evidence. The examples here are original teaching examples.
Cialdini’s framework covers reciprocity, commitment and consistency, social proof, liking, authority, scarcity and unity. The expanded Influence includes unity. These headings organise a much older and wider field of research into how people affect one another.
Effects depend on the person, relationship and situation. Several influences may be present together.
Reciprocity is the tendency to respond to a benefit with something in return. Amina receives a free biscuit in a shop. Alongside enjoying it, she begins to feel a small obligation to the assistant.
Amina entered to look around. The assistant hands her a biscuit without asking for payment. The exchange now includes a favour, which can make the relationship feel different from an ordinary encounter between strangers.
The assistant points towards a box for sale. Amina notices that buying it feels like a way to repay the kindness. The biscuit’s price and her original shopping needs have stayed unchanged.
Amina thanks the assistant and considers whether she wants the whole box. The feeling of obligation is real as an experience. The sample still leaves her free to decide how, or whether, to reciprocate.
Cialdini includes reciprocity among the influences on agreement. Amina’s biscuit shows how giving can produce a pull to return something. Across relationships that pull can support cooperation, and it can also create pressure.

Cialdini popularised reciprocity within Influence. Dennis Regan studied favours and compliance in 1971; reciprocity has a longer history in social science.
In Dennis Regan’s 1971 experiment, participants who received a drink from another person later bought more raffle tickets from him. The study helped separate the effect of a favour from how much participants liked the person.
Reciprocity describes a tendency to respond to a favour or concession. Relationships, culture, resources and the size of a request influence the response. Receiving help creates no automatic obligation to accept a later request.
A gift can create pressure. Giving someone something leaves them free to refuse a later request.
Consistency means wanting later actions to fit an earlier choice. Ben volunteers for one Saturday. When the organiser requests every Saturday, his first agreement makes the larger commitment feel harder to decline.
Ben can help at the community shop this weekend. He tells the organiser yes and makes room in his calendar. That specific agreement becomes part of how he sees himself: someone who helps.
The organiser asks Ben to become a regular Saturday volunteer. His earlier yes is now a reference point. Agreeing again would feel consistent, although the new request uses much more of his time.
Weekly shifts would overlap with Ben’s other commitments. Those consequences belong to the new request. Treating both requests as the same would hide the difference between helping once and becoming responsible every week.
Cialdini’s consistency principle helps explain Ben’s discomfort about changing his answer. His earlier commitment has a defined scope. A separate decision about the weekly role can include his values, available time and new information.
An earlier agreement can influence a later choice even when the size of the commitment changes.

Cialdini connects commitment and consistency in Influence. Jonathan Freedman and Scott Fraser published the cited request experiments in 1966.
Freedman and Fraser’s 1966 experiments found that agreeing to a small request could increase agreement to a later, larger request. One experiment used the same requester; another used different requesters. This is often called the foot-in-the-door effect.
An earlier yes has a particular scope. Reconsidering a later request can be a sensible response to new information.
Liking can make people more willing to agree with someone. Leo visits a bicycle seller and discovers they enjoy the same cycling route. The pleasant connection makes the bicycle feel more appealing too.
The seller describes a hill that Leo rides every weekend. Leo enjoys being understood. That sense of similarity changes the relationship, although the bicycle’s condition remains exactly as it was before the conversation.

When the seller recommends the bicycle, Leo feels inclined to accept. The recommendation arrives from someone he now likes. His positive feeling about the person can influence his judgement of the thing being sold.
Leo tries the bicycle and examines its brakes. One pad is worn. That observation adds a fact about the purchase which the friendly conversation could never establish by itself. The enjoyable connection remains.
Cialdini includes liking among influences on agreement. Leo’s encounter shows the pathway: similarity creates warmth, warmth increases receptiveness, and a recommendation gains force. Direct evidence about the bicycle completes the buying picture.

Cialdini includes liking in Influence. Jerry Burger, Nicole Messian, Shebani Patel, Alicia del Prado and Carmen Anderson conducted the cited similarity studies.
Burger and colleagues’ 2004 studies found greater agreement to requests when students believed they shared incidental details, such as a birthday, with the requester. Small similarities can affect a social interaction, even when the similarity tells us little about the request.
Liking is one influence among many. Its effects vary with the relationship, request and setting.
Scarcity means something seems harder to obtain. Ben is considering a workshop when its page shows two places remaining. The limit makes missing out feel more likely, increasing the pressure to decide quickly.
Ben likes the subject and reads the workshop description. At this point he is weighing what he would learn against the price and date. The event has a particular value within his existing plans.
The availability message becomes the most noticeable detail. Ben imagines the last place disappearing while he waits. This imagined loss can make booking feel more pressing although the course itself has remained unchanged.

The workshop clashes with Ben’s family weekend. Scarcity supplies information about availability, while the calendar supplies information about fit. Both facts remain true even when the deadline makes one much louder than the other.
Cialdini’s scarcity principle explains the increased pull. Ben’s decision becomes clearer when capacity, usefulness and the date share the picture. A truthful limit can inform the choice; a fabricated countdown would distort it.

Cialdini popularised scarcity in Influence. Stephen Worchel, Jerry Lee and Akanbi Adewole studied supply and perceived value in 1975.
Worchel, Lee and Adewole’s 1975 experiments varied the supply of cookies. Scarce cookies received higher desirability ratings in the conditions studied. A change from abundant to scarce also mattered, as did the explanation given for the shortage.
Picture two labels beside an identical item: one left, and many available. The labels change the situation around the item. Before deciding, write one sentence about what the item would do for you. Then compare that benefit with its cost.
Availability and usefulness are separate questions. A real limit gives information; invented limits can mislead people.
Unity is Cialdini’s term for influence through a shared identity. Amina and her neighbours use the same courtyard. Calling it our garden makes improvements feel like something that concerns them together.

A resident with caring duties has no free time that weekend. The courtyard still belongs to them. Treating attendance as the test of belonging could turn a useful shared identity into pressure or exclusion.
The gardening day illustrates unity: our group and our place make cooperation feel closer. The same pull can favour insiders or make refusal difficult. Fairness and freedom to contribute remain part of the full picture.

Cialdini added unity to the expanded Influence. His earlier research with Stephanie Brown, Brian Lewis, Carol Luce and Steven Neuberg explored closeness and helping.
Cialdini and colleagues’ 1997 research explored closeness and willingness to help. They examined how much people felt that another person overlapped with their sense of self. This earlier work contributes to the background of Cialdini’s later unity principle.
A shared identity can support cooperation and favour insiders. The reasons, fairness and consequences of a request still need attention.
Demartini teaches that negative experiences contain benefits and positive experiences contain drawbacks. His proposed breakthrough is an emotional shift when both become visible together. Leila missing a promotion gives us one everyday illustration of that teaching.
Leila wanted the extra pay and feels disappointed when somebody else gets the role. In her first picture, her present job looks like a loss and the promoted job looks better in every way.

An original explanation of his account of benefits, drawbacks and emotional charge.
Demartini makes a stronger philosophical claim: benefits and drawbacks are always perfectly balanced. Establishing that as a universal fact would require a clear way to measure each side and independent evidence.
Here, cancelling out describes his proposed change in emotional intensity. The event, its consequences and responsibility for what happened remain part of the picture.
The Breakthrough Experience is both a book title and a seminar name. The seminar teaches the Demartini Method, his structured process for examining perceptions.
Harm, accountability and personal boundaries still matter. A person may continue to feel distressed while considering several perspectives. Clinical claims require separate evidence.
Perception is how someone makes sense of sensory information. Leah sees a curved shape beside a doorway in dim light and briefly takes it for a cat. More light later reveals that the object is a bag.
Leah can see the object’s outline but few surface details. A familiar cat shape offers one plausible interpretation. Her previous experience and the available visual clues both contribute to what the scene seems to contain.
When the light increases, a handle and fabric folds become visible. These features fit a bag better than a cat. The incoming information now supports a different account of the same object in the same place.
Leah recognises her bag and picks it up. The physical object had remained there throughout. What changed was the information available and the interpretation guiding her action, moving from possible animal to familiar possession.
The doorway scene connects sensory input, previous knowledge and an evolving interpretation. It explains an ordinary mistake without implying that any imaginable interpretation is equally accurate. Better information can constrain what the scene reasonably supports.
Perception combines available sensory clues with prior knowledge and can change when better information arrives.
Bottom-up processing begins with incoming sensory features. Top-down influences come from knowledge and expectations. Both can contribute to a single experience. Hearing an unclear word inside a familiar sentence illustrates how surrounding meaning can help resolve an ambiguous sound.
Specific theories of perception differ, and a simple construction metaphor leaves out many neural mechanisms.
Attention gives selected information more of the mind’s limited capacity. Amina searches a crowded shelf for a yellow book. Her goal makes yellow shapes stand out, while a sudden loud sound can pull attention elsewhere.

Amina remembers the book’s colour and scans the shelf. Yellow covers receive particular attention because they fit her current purpose. Titles and nearby objects that matter less to the search can receive less processing.
Someone drops a heavy object nearby. The abrupt sound draws Amina’s attention away from the shelf. Her mind now gives priority to information that could explain the unexpected event in the surrounding room.
After identifying the harmless noise, Amina looks back at the books. She has to recover which section she had already checked. The interruption created a cost because attention and the current search state had shifted.
The yellow book and the crash reveal different influences on selection. A goal can guide attention, and a salient event can capture it. A single spotlight analogy is useful but covers only part of the mechanisms involved.
Attention allocates limited processing to selected information and can shift through goals or unexpected events.
Imagine ten labelled objects on a table. Search only for circular ones, then hide the picture and list what you remember. Your chosen task changes which details receive priority. This small exercise illustrates selection, with performance varying across people and conditions.
A spotlight is a useful first picture, but attention includes several functions, including selecting locations, features and tasks. You can attend to a voice while looking elsewhere. The different functions depend on interacting networks and the demands of the current activity.
Attention has several mechanisms, so a single spotlight captures only part of how it works.
Working memory keeps a small amount of information available while someone works with it. Amina calculates seventeen plus eight by reaching twenty first. She needs to retain both the intermediate total and the part still to add.
Amina adds three of the eight to seventeen, reaching twenty. Her original task is still unfinished. She now has to keep track of the new total while remembering that five of the eight remain unused.
Keeping twenty and the remaining five in mind uses working memory. An interruption can make one piece harder to retain. The difficulty concerns maintaining the current calculation state while continuing to operate on it.
Amina writes twenty and five on a page, then adds them to get twenty-five. The visible record carries information she previously had to retain internally. She can look back at the page if interrupted.

The addition example shows temporary information supporting ongoing work. Familiarity, grouping and the use of external aids can change the demand. Working-memory capacity is limited, while any simple fixed item count leaves important differences between tasks and people.
Working memory keeps information available while it is being used, and external records can carry some of that load.
A chunk is a meaningful group. The letters C, A and T can form the familiar chunk “cat”. Familiarity helps you treat several pieces as one useful unit, so apparent capacity depends on what the pieces mean and what you already know.
Research often finds only a few chunks available under controlled conditions, with the estimate depending on the task and method. The work-surface picture expresses that limited capacity. A universal fixed number for every person and every situation would oversimplify the evidence.

Memory allows information from an earlier experience to influence later thought or action. Leah meets Mina and hears her name. At their next meeting, seeing Mina’s face can help Leah bring that name back to mind.
Leah listens when Mina introduces herself and uses the name in their conversation. Paying attention gives the name a chance to be recorded with the face and situation. A distracted introduction might leave a weaker connection.
Leah hears Mina describe the garden they both visit. The name becomes connected with a face, a place and an experience. Those connections can offer several routes by which the earlier encounter later comes to mind.

At their next meeting Leah sees Mina and remembers the introduction. The familiar face helps bring the name back. Retrieval means making stored information available again, with the current situation supplying a route into the earlier experience.
Leah may confidently remember the name while misremembering part of the conversation. Memory is selective and reconstructive. Different forms of memory support names, events and skills, so one simple storage picture leaves much of the system unexplained.
Memory depends on what is taken in, how it is retained and what later helps retrieve it.
Facts, personal events and practised skills place different demands on memory systems. Knowing a bicycle has two wheels, remembering your first ride and balancing while riding are related experiences with different forms of memory involved. One storage-box picture hides those distinctions.
A retrieval cue is like a starting point along a path. The cue can help access information associated with it, while other similar memories compete. Repeatedly using a fact in varied meaningful examples can create additional useful routes for later access.
Memory is selective and reconstructive, and confidence can exceed accuracy.
Retrieval practice means trying to bring learned information back to mind. After reading about a transistor, Ben explains it from memory. The attempt reveals what he can reconstruct and can support later remembering when checked and corrected.
While the lesson is open, Ben recognises its words and diagram. That familiarity makes the idea feel accessible. It gives limited information about whether he can reconstruct the relationships when the supporting page is absent.
Ben describes a transistor as a device that controls current, then hesitates over how one signal affects another path. The missing connection becomes visible through his attempt, even though the full paragraph had looked familiar moments earlier.
Ben compares his explanation with the lesson and revisits the control relationship. Feedback makes the correction specific. His next attempt can include the missing step instead of repeating an incomplete account with increasing confidence.

Trying to recall and then checking the result can strengthen memory while exposing gaps in understanding.
Familiarity can make a displayed explanation feel easy. A blank page creates a different demand: producing the idea yourself. Write a short answer before revealing the lesson. Comparing the two provides evidence about your current understanding and a target for the next attempt.
Retrieval tasks can range from recalling a word to applying a principle in a new example. Match the practice to the ability you want. If you want to explain a concept in conversation, practise explaining a small mechanism aloud and checking its accuracy.
Benefits vary with material, difficulty, timing and feedback, and inaccurate answers need correction.
Spaced practice spreads learning over sessions separated in time. Amina learns five new words, returns to them tomorrow and revisits them later in the week. The gaps make each return a fresh attempt to recover earlier learning.

This schedule illustrates spacing without prescribing a universal timetable. The useful interval varies with difficulty, successful recall and how long Amina needs the words. Spaced practice concerns meaningful returns over time, with suitable feedback when memory is incomplete.
Returning to learning after a gap can support retention, with the useful spacing shaped by the material and learner.
Longer gaps can make retrieval harder, and overly long gaps can make recall fail. The useful balance changes as knowledge strengthens. An adaptive schedule uses your performance as information, while remembering that a single successful answer gives limited evidence of durable understanding.
There is no single spacing schedule that is best for every material, learner and retention goal.
Classical conditioning is learning that one event predicts another. A dog repeatedly hears a particular sound just before food arrives. Over time the sound can prompt anticipation and salivation because it has become informative about the meal.
When food arrives, the dog may salivate and prepare to eat. The sound initially provides little information about the meal. The learning situation begins with an existing response to food and a separate audible event.
The sound occurs shortly before food across repeated occasions. Its timing makes it useful as a signal. The dog can learn a relationship between hearing the sound and what is likely to arrive next.
After this learning, the sound alone can bring anticipation and salivation before the food appears. The earlier response now begins in relation to a predictive cue. The dog’s experience has changed what the sound means in that setting.
If the sound repeatedly occurs without food, its predictive value changes and the response may weaken. Context, timing and biological differences matter. Conditioning describes a learned relationship that remains responsive to the animal’s later experience.
A cue can acquire meaning through a reliable relationship with a significant event.
Extinction refers to a reduction in a learned response when the cue repeatedly appears without the expected event. Later recovery can occur under some conditions, showing why a simple erased-link picture leaves out important features of the learning process.
Conditioning depends on timing, context, biological predispositions and the information supplied by the cue.
Reinforcement occurs when an action’s consequence makes that action more likely later. Amina lifts a sticky drawer slightly and it opens. That useful result can increase the chance that she uses the same movement next time.
Amina wants the drawer’s contents but ordinary pulling fails. The drawer’s resistance creates a practical problem. Different movements remain possible, and she has yet to learn which one reliably changes the result.
She lifts while pulling, and the drawer slides out. The important relationship is between that particular movement and successful opening. A consequence can reinforce behaviour when it changes what the person is likely to do again.
The next time Amina reaches for the drawer, she lifts slightly while pulling. The earlier result has influenced her present action. Observing this increased repetition is what supports calling the previous consequence reinforcement.
Amina’s drawer illustrates reinforcement through successful access. A gift or praise would count as reinforcement only if it increased the relevant action in that setting. What matters is the observed relationship between consequence and later behaviour.

A consequence functions as reinforcement when it increases the action that produced it in that setting.
Positive reinforcement adds a consequence that increases behaviour, such as praise that encourages another attempt. Negative reinforcement removes an unpleasant condition, such as a seat-belt alarm stopping after fastening. Positive and negative refer to adding and removing in this technical vocabulary.
Timing and consistency matter. A consequence closely connected with an action can be easier to learn from than a distant unclear result. Track the exact sequence of cue, behaviour and consequence before assuming a promised reward is actually shaping the behaviour you intended.
A reward chosen by an observer functions as reinforcement only if it increases the relevant behaviour.
Observational learning involves learning through seeing another person act. Ben watches someone fold a paper boat. The demonstration shows an order of movements that he can remember and later attempt with his own sheet.
The teacher folds the sheet in half, then aligns the corners. Ben sees how each shape prepares the following step. The visible sequence contains information that a picture of the completed boat alone would omit.
Pausing between movements gives Ben time to follow the changing shape. He forms a memory of which action comes next. Attention to the demonstration and memory for its order both contribute to the later attempt.
Ben tries the folds himself and leaves one corner misaligned. Recognising the next step does not automatically supply precise hand movement. The first attempt adds information about which part of performing the action needs practice.
Ben adjusts the corner after comparing it with the demonstrated shape. Watching supplied a sequence, and practice exposed a movement difficulty. Observational learning can support skill development while execution still benefits from feedback and repeated attempts.

Watching supplies information about an action while practice reveals what is needed to perform it.
Observed consequences can influence whether a person chooses to imitate. Watching an action succeed or fail gives information about possible outcomes. The observer’s own goals, context and ability still influence what they do with that information when an opportunity appears.
Watching a demonstration can support learning, while skilled performance usually also requires suitable practice and feedback.
Habits are actions that become likely in familiar situations through repetition. Leah places her keys on a hook when she arrives home. Repeating that action in the same setting can gradually reduce how much deliberate thought it needs.
At first Leah consciously remembers the new hook. Her keys could still land in a pocket or on a table. The intended place becomes reliable only as the arrival and the placing action repeatedly occur together.
Across further arrivals, seeing the doorway and hook increasingly brings the keys routine to mind. The repeated connection makes the action easier to initiate in that setting, alongside any deliberate intention Leah still uses.
