How I understand it.
Business stories often become tidier after the outcome is known. To learn from a case, separate what happened, what the people involved knew at the time and the explanation being offered afterwards. Look for evidence that supports the explanation and evidence that might challenge it. A strategy may contain deliberate choices, adaptation and luck in different proportions. Compare plausible accounts of the same outcome, then ask what further information would help distinguish them. State your recommendation using the information available at the decision point. Identify assumptions and the signals that would make you revise it. This habit makes case discussion useful for judgement: you practise reasoning under uncertainty and carry forward a conditional lesson whose boundaries remain visible.
03 · A fictional example
Put it into a business.
A retailer's subscription service grows rapidly. One account credits a detailed original launch plan; another points to an unexpected change in customer habits. A reviewer reconstructs the timeline, checks what managers forecast and compares regions exposed to different market conditions. The lesson becomes a set of testable explanations, with clear limits on what another retailer should copy next.
