How I understand it.
Start with a recurring business choice and describe the mechanism that connects it to an outcome. A delivery assignment, for example, depends on available drivers, journey times, deadlines and the cost of delay. This simplified model reveals which data the decision needs and which constraints it must respect. Data then estimates the uncertain parts of the model, such as demand or likely travel time. A decision rule uses those estimates to choose an action. Review the complete chain when performance disappoints: a weak model, unreliable inputs or an unsuitable objective can each produce poor choices. Give the system an owner who can inspect outcomes and update assumptions. The same framework supports a spreadsheet calculation, a manual scheduling process or a more automated decision system.
03 · A fictional example
Put it into a business.
A bakery wants to reduce unsold lunches. It models demand by weekday, weather and nearby office attendance. The manager collects those inputs and chooses tomorrow’s production quantities within kitchen capacity. Each afternoon, sales and waste update the estimates. The first version runs in a spreadsheet, making the link between evidence, production decisions and waste easy to inspect daily.
