Religion as a harness

I think of religion as a harness for human intelligence. Intelligence can go rogue when it's being used to pursue whatever we desire.

Do we install that harness early in life? Give people a set of boundaries that helps them live together?

Different religions have different forms. I wonder whether they share that function: giving our desires some direction so society can live in harmony.

And what happens when our desires go beyond the harness?
