A future version of me
Dan Sullivan has a question I like: imagine looking back three years from now. What would have happened for you to feel happy with your progress?
I make a vision board every year. I give myself a picture of a future version of me. That gives me something to move towards.
Then I have to look at the current version. What am I doing that gets in the way? What am I holding on to? What do I need to learn? I have to keep carving myself.
My coach once said something that stayed with me: no one wakes up in the morning thinking about your desires. If I want something, I have to take ownership of pursuing it.
I enjoy having something to direct my energy towards. Something that gives me joy and does no harm to anyone else. Building, learning and moving to the next level.
I don’t know whether that process ever stops. I used to want fixed answers. These days I am more comfortable having a direction and finding out as I go.
