AI & the future

Is society already a superintelligence?

I was listening to Tobi Lütke, Shopify's founder and CEO. One idea stayed with me: we talk about being afraid of superintelligence, but perhaps society is already a form of it.

We give ourselves the illusion that we're in control. I rely on the police, doctors and other people who understand things I don't. I've contributed very little to creating most of the technology I use, but I'm a beneficiary of it every day.

What is superintelligence from my point of view? Something I can access that's smarter than I am, with knowledge and capabilities beyond my own?

I think society already does that. Its knowledge is spread across people and institutions. I can draw on it without having to know or build everything myself.

I see AI as a synthetic form of that collective intelligence.
