Life

AI adoption and organisational inertia

I keep speaking to people in senior roles who know AI matters but are waiting for someone from outside to come and implement it.

Meanwhile, their businesses carry on with the same processes. Someone asks a question, several people forward emails, and eventually someone looks in a system and sends the answer back.

I look at that and see an opportunity to change how the work gets done.

My own understanding came from spending time with AI. Chatting, experimenting, making it code and eventually building agents. What started as faffing changed how I think about my business.

I have the curiosity, the mandate and the resources to experiment. That combination has allowed me to act. It is also part of why I do Biruni Systems: helping businesses turn these possibilities into working software and automation.

I think we will see more cases like Blockbuster, the video-rental chain that struggled as customers moved to Netflix and other services. It filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 under pressure from competition and debt.

With AI, I see a similar risk: familiar ways of working become increasingly expensive as competitors find faster ways to deliver the same value.

The risk grows with every useful improvement a competitor makes while you are still waiting to get started.
